Memphis had a great birthday weekend. Remember this summer when I whined because I felt so guilty that Cora Jo and Ransom never get a “friend-party” for their summer birthdays as we are always moving..blah..yadda..ya…blah. Memphis on the other hand, ALWAYS gets a friend party (Jet ALWAYS has a Batman party—friends or no—but that’s a different post). Ironic then that I found myself trying to talk Memphis out of a birthday party…”Can’t we have a lovely family dinner? What about we go bowling? Nothing says happy birthday like going for a swim at the beach with your family!” She wasn’t impressed. We settled on a Saturday night birthday brinner party with a few neighborhood friends. Brinner= breakfast for dinner.
We ended up with six girls who inhaled pancakes, bacon, sausage, juice, hot cocoa with whipped cream, and cupcakes. Pre-party table pic:
I tried to get a picture with the food on the table, but when I turned around to get the camera, the food was gone. I guess it was a hit. Then the girls bounced on the trampoline, tried to beat Ransom at Just Dance on the Wii (and lost), and giggled themselves silly.
Don’t give me a hard time about the mini-cupcakes…remember they have just slammed six stacks of pancakes with syrup.
Here was the party favor: a CD mix of Mem’s favorite songs (for this week) and a pack of gum.
We made her wait to open her presents from us until Sunday morning. She was very patient.
Even before we moved to Japan, Memphis was fascinated with Re-Ment miniature sets. They are mostly produced in this part of the world, but they are certainly not cheaper here. Memphis found this Mister Donut set (popular donut chain here) in a Japanese department store and fell in love. I know I have lived in California too long when my first thought was, “This is definitely not BPA free plastic, and it is probably painted with lead paint from China.”
Grief. We bought it anyway. It was on sale for 3,990 yen= around $50.
Once she opened the gifts, the older three all disappeared and played with all the miniature donuts and accessories until we left for the Macaroni Grill on base for dinner. Now we are done birthday party planning until January when we hit the replay button on Batman for Jet.
