Since moving to Okinawa, I have seamlessly transitioned from being a three-posts-a-week blog to a three-posts-a-month blog. I know, impressive.
Today, I met Matt for lunch on his base. We walked up, ordered, and took our sandwiches to a table. When I sat down across from him, I noticed he had an open wound above his right eyebrow, a black eye beginning, and one ear looked like it had been bitten.
“What’s wrong with you? Did you get in a fight?” (Why, yes, this IS me being compassionate.)
“No, I jumped in with a group for PT (physical training) this morning.”
“PT? What kind of PT?”
“Well, we ran a little, did some push ups and stuff,” he paused, took a bite of his sandwich, and I wondered if he wiped out on the run. “And then we paired up for some ground fighting, grappling stuff.”
“Of course. Grappling. *cue eye-rolling* Does the other guy look worse?”
“Yeah, he had to go sit out.” He tried not to smile.
“Nice. See, this is the problem with having a chaplain with a mixed martial arts black belt. It’s not a fair fight. The guy was probably trying NOT to kill the chaplain, you know, being merciful, trying NOT to get in trouble with God and all, then WHAM.”
“I was bleeding when we finished.” He showed me the back of the other ear which was caked with dried blood and looked like someone tried to tear it off.
“I’m so proud. Here’s some ibuprofen.” I reached in my purse and handed him the bottle.
Good thing we already finished our Christmas pictures. Mercy.
*for those following my NaNoWriMo progress, I am at 37,000 words today, hoping to clear 40,000 this weekend. 50,000 is the goal by the end of November, but we are headed to Tokyo for a few days after Thanksgiving. Thanks for your encouragement!

Haha…unfortunately they will think it is AWESOME. Can’t wait to see pics.
LOL! Awesome! “trying not to get in trouble with God…” LOVE it! Good job on NaNoWriMo. My daughter is trying to finish hers from last year, this month.
Hope she gets it finished, Carrie– what an accomplishment for a student! (or anyone for that matter.)
