Jedediah hopped on the bus Tuesday and started kindergarten. I did not stalk the bus and sneak through the bushes to snap pictures of him or to make sure he didn’t get lost on the way to his classroom. This either indicates I am exercising great restraint or general back-to-school fatigue. Probably both. It was much harder for me to send those older two to the baited jaws of middle school than for me to send Jet to kindergarten down the street. Plus, he is number four, so I am practically required to have fewer pictures of him, right?

The first day, he hopped on the bus and never looked back, unlike a couple other kids at the bus stop who wept, spat, clung, and eventually got a ride. I didn’t know whether to be proud or crushed that my five-year-old left me behind without so much as a tear. Not to fear though—day 2, Jet sprawled himself on the floor after breakfast and declared he was done with school, his teacher was slapping kids, and he’d rather stay home and play batman. *big sigh* Cora Jo gave him lecture #126 “Importance of education…” and I followed with lecture #522 “you can’t say someone slapped you when they didn’t, especially a teacher or a mommy, since either one will get you a fast track ticket to a visit with the military police, school psychologist, and CPS.”  Today we were back to getting on the bus with no drama. Tomorrow we’ll likely repeat the weeping and gnashing day.

People keep asking me what I will do with all my free time now that I am a lady of leisure. I haven’t found any free time hanging around so far (darn people in this house keep changing clothes and creating laundry!), and it feels like I haven’t sat down all week (except to write this). Today I got a 3 mile run in and gave Carolina a bath, so I must have had a little time to myself. I’m pretty sure I never gave our lab Baby a bath, but then she never fit in the sink. I digress.

My goal today is venture out solo to the home improvement store to try to find some starter herb plants and some garden soil. Maybe I’ll go wild and even plant them. Or take a quick nap with the puppy—we’ll see how it goes.
