The dusk creeps in
Suspended
Held between
Hot summer day
And the cooler night
I blink in the still air
A flicker
Was it? Breath held–
I stare. I squint.
Then again,
A glimmer
Against the darkening foliage
Yes! Firefly!
Breathless
Daring not to blink
Another light answers
And another!
Until the leaves glow
In a winking mottled sheet
I grin
I speak firefly tonight
I imagine they blink for me
The gift of light
Light in the darkness
Unexpected
Unanswerable
Leaning close
My eyes reflect
The glimmering
Eyes to see the light
Unanswerable grace
Firefly gifts
