Sometimes I set things down for a minute, fully intending to pick them right back up. Later, I’ll walk by, maybe dust them off slightly or feel a twinge of guilt. Eventually they get put away with the unfinished crafts or the Christmas decorations.

Time passes. The things seem heavier and harder to pick up and hold.

Do you ever set things down?

It’s time for me to pick things up again, if only for a tiny bit each day. I’ve had small wonders all around me despite the months spent sick—sinus sick and homesick.

This weekend, we went to a food and flower festival. We ate noodles and chicken-on-a-stick, snow cones and cotton candy. The flats of flowers, herbs, vegetables, and succulents spilled onto the sidewalks, begging me to take them home.

Friends stateside report freezing temps and snow days, but here, sweet mikan (clementines) are just finishing their season and strawberries are in full harvest.  The flower beds and fields around Okinawa are awake and in full bloom. It’s planting time. Time to start sowing the seeds again.
