The first weekend in November, my sister Becky and our friend Mandi and I flew into Savannah for a half-marathon. We stayed at a hotel in the heart of the historic district, right around the corner from the busy City Market area.
On Friday, we sprinted through the race expo, because we wanted every available minute out in the city. From the expo, we headed over to our first haunted location for lunch: The Olde Pink House.
They had immediate seating in the Tavern Bar area in the basement, which sounds gloomy, but it opened out onto the street and had a wall of windows letting in the natural light. It’s reportedly one of the oldest buildings in Savannah. The food was delicious (see my bbq sliders with slaw and homemade bread and butter pickles– you can’t see the sweet potato fries), and we enjoyed their signature drink, the Pink Lady, which was a lot like a light raspberry lemonade. We didn’t see any ghosts, but a man came in and sat at the bar wearing a seersucker suit with a yellow bow tie.
From there, we wandered up and down Broughton Street, with all its boutiques and shops. At the Savannah Bee Company, we tasted a cheesecake made with honey instead of sugar that I wish I could have packed away in my suitcase.
We stopped at a French Café called Papillote for an early dinner and carb load. The girls got risotto macaroni and cheese, while I had a ham and apple sandwich—well, that makes it sound like minor leagues. It was probably a quarter pound of ham, soft cheese, and a thinly sliced granny smith apple, all on top of a slice of crusty bread. We shared a loaf of brioche- sweet bread.
The food was so good, but we all agreed it was a little rich for a pre-race meal. We’re sticking to Italian carb-loading from now on. Next up: Day 2 a little LOT of running and a little haunting!
