We’re preparing for an international move to Japan. If you’ve missed the details, you can read a little here or here. After getting over the initial shock of extreme downsizing, I realized we have already been working that direction, and this move is going to accelerate our efforts. Over the past few years, we have been working to get out of debt, so we have minimized purchases and most of what we own was given to us or we bought used. It is a mishmash of functional and odd. Because we move every few years, we have ruthlessly purged with each move. Some things I love, and other things I have been trying to talk movers into ‘losing’ for the last couple moves. We want to be earth conscious and don’t want a bunch of stuff to end up in a landfill, or alternately find ourselves scrapping to spend a lot of money replacing things unnecessarily when we get back. So we have begun our purge with our big furniture.
Knowing that we can’t take any furniture (they have a furniture loan locker we can use for the duration of our tour), makes sorting the big stuff easy. The questions I am asking:
1. Do I love it?
2. Is it something that will store well in non-climate controlled storage?
3. Will I likely still need it (or want it) when we return?
I lost a little over 300 pounds just a couple weeks ago. Sold all the living room furniture.
The living room is empty and the move begins to feel real. Isn’t it a bit early, you ask? Maybe, but we had already promised the two couches and chair to friends, and they needed it. Besides, two neighbors already brought over a chair and loveseat for us to use until we move. Have I mentioned that I have the best neighbors?
